Counting down
Our families knew each other long before we did. What started as respectful visits became long conversations, and then a quiet certainty on both sides.
Abubakar's aunts will carry the kayan lefe to Aisha's home, boxes of cloth, shoes, perfume, a Qur'an and a prayer mat, before the wedding. The night before, Aisha's friends will gather for the wuni, laughing and painting her hands and feet with lalle.
The Fatihah is short and sacred: the sadaki is settled, the vows are exchanged before the imam, and prayers are said for us. Then the Walima, a full day of food, colour and celebration.
It's a Muslim celebration, so there's no alcohol, and modest dress is appreciated. Everything else, the food, the henna, the joy, we share with you gladly.
